East Coast Lagoon Food Village sits on land reclaimed from the sea starting in the 1960s, with the lagoon itself laid out between 1972 and 1976. Construction of the hawker centre began in April 1977 and finished in 1978 at a cost of $685,000 — a single-level timber structure designed to blend into its seaside setting, with 10 cooking stalls under distinctive butterfly-shaped roofs and eating areas sheltered by 40 pyramid-topped shelters. Its first hawkers relocated from Alkaff Lane near McPherson Road. Despite being Singapore's only seaside hawker centre, it struggled through the 1980s before becoming an island-wide foodie destination by the late 1990s.
