Kebun Baru Market and Food Centre was completed in 1976, part of the wave of construction as the Ang Mo Kio township was developed. Its name, Malay for "new garden" or "new plantation," reflected the freshly cleared land it stood on. The centre holds 29 cooked food stalls at Block 226 Ang Mo Kio Street 22, and received an upgrade in 2010 to keep the space current for the neighbourhood it has served for nearly five decades.
Built in 1976 as Ang Mo Kio township took shape, "Kebun Baru" means "new garden" in Malay — a fitting name for this then-freshly built neighbourhood.
