Serangoon Garden was carved out in the early 1950s by British developer Steven Charles Macey as an estate for British military personnel and their families — a world away from what it is today. Its hawker market grew alongside the neighbourhood, and stalls like the Serangoon Garden Bakery & Confectionery, running since the 1970s, are still among its biggest draws. Old-school flavours dominate: sizzling oyster omelette, Teochew duck rice, and nostalgic bakes served by family-run stalls spanning generations. The market was even voted Singapore's favourite hawker centre in 2024 — and sits right next to Chomp Chomp, the neighbourhood's famous night-food strip.
Serangoon Garden began in the 1950s as a private estate for British military families. Decades later its market was voted Singapore's favourite hawker centre.
