Telok Blangah carries one of Singapore's oldest names, its bay supposedly shaped like a "blangah" — a clay cooking pot — though some say the word is Bugis for "anchorage." Sang Nila Utama is said to have anchored here as far back as 1299, and centuries later Stamford Raffles granted 200 acres of the area to local chieftain Temenggong Abdul Rahman and his 10,000 followers. Against that backdrop, Telok Blangah Crescent Market & Food Centre is a relative newcomer, built in 1974 and refreshed with a 2009 facelift that added ramps and wider walkways for elderly patrons. Today it holds 56 food stalls and 77 market stalls, serving the neighbourhood much as it has for nearly five decades.
Telok Blangah's bay is said to be shaped like a "blangah" — a clay cooking pot. Raffles once granted this land to Temenggong Abdul Rahman; today its market has fed the area since 1974.
