Toa Payoh takes its name from the Hokkien for "big swamp," a fitting description of the rural marshland and kampongs that stood here before HDB transformed the area into one of Singapore's earliest satellite towns. The Lorong 8 Market & Hawker Centre followed in 1974, growing into one of the largest hawker centres in the Toa Payoh area with 80 cooked food stalls and 77 market stalls under one roof. It remains one of three major hawker centres serving the estate, each with its own distinct lineup of stalls and regulars.
"Toa Payoh" is Hokkien for "big swamp" — exactly what this land was before HDB built one of Singapore's largest hawker centres here in 1974.
